CIU (Customer Interface Unit) or UIU (User Interface Unit) is the gateway or access terminal to Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepaid meter. It is usually placed inside the user’s premises, while the main meter is mounted outside the property. The CIU is also called UIU because they perform the same function. It acts as a user-friendly device through which you can load tokens and monitor your electricity usage.
The prepaid meter’s CIU performs a variety of functions, like loading tokens into the meter, checking the meter’s credit balance, and operating the meter, among others. How to Activate CIU Prepaid Meter
To activate your prepaid meter’s customer interface unit, follow the steps below:
1. Ensure that your Prepaid Meter is Installed Properly
Before you even talk of activating your meter’s CIU, you need to install the meter first. Qualified technicians will need to install the prepaid meter in your property. After the installation, the technician will link your CIU to the main meter and you will get a Meter Identification Number (MIN). If the meter has been installed, proceed to the next step.
2. Gather all your Prepaid Meter Information
To successfully activate your CIU prepaid meter, you need the following information:
- Meter Identification Number (MIN) or Meter Number: This is the unique number assigned to your meter during installation.
- Account Number: This is the customer’s account number associated with your electricity billing account.
- Utility provider customer support number.
3. Power On Your CIU Prepaid Meter
Once the meter is properly installed and you’ve got all the necessary information, you will then power your CIU prepaid meter to start the activation proper. As you may have known, your CIU has a display screen, numeric keypad, and indicator lights.
To power it on, you will need to plug the CIU into suitable power source so that its display screen will be active
4. Load Your First Prepaid Electricity Token through the CIU
Once your CIU prepaid meter is powered on, the next step is to load your first prepaid token. The process of loading prepaid electricity units into the meter via the CIU involves:
- Buying the prepaid tokens from reliable vendors
- Entering the 20-digit tokens into the meter
- After inputting the tokens, click on the ‘’Enter’’ button
- If you got it right, your CIU will display the available credit balance for your meter. And your electricity will be activated automatically.
5. Verify Activation
Once you load the tokens successfully using the CIU, it will display the number of credit units that you’ve got to your meter account. At this point, you have successfully activated your prepaid meter customer interface unit. That’s all.
