Ekurhuleni Municipality Conventional Electricity Meters Replacement with Prepaid Meters: All you Should Know

Ekurhuleni city has rolled out a program to replace the conventional electricity meters in the city with prepaid meters. This initiative is aimed at enhancing transparency in the energy sector and ensuring that the issues of illegal electricity connections, meter tampering, etc. become a thing of the past.

The proposed new prepaid meter is designed to offer convenience to electricity users by allowing them to have full control of their energy usage, enhancing efficient energy management within the city.

The contractors from electrical meter management will carry out the conventional meter replacement program; they will be allocated to different areas within the city.

The contractor is saddled with the responsibility of installing the prepaid meter and also guiding users on how to use the meter. Meanwhile, it is expected that the meter swapping program will only last for about 30 to 60 minutes, during which time consumers will be cut off from power supply until the meter is successfully replaced.

Additionally, the new prepayment meter is expected to come with 40 units of pre-loaded credit, which users will repay on their next recharge. However, if a consumer isn’t ready for the mete replacement on the scheduled date, such a user can reschedule the meter swapping date within the next 7 days after the initial date. But if any consumer fails to allow the contractor to replace the meter after a grace period, such a user will be disconnected from the power supply.
