Interestingly, the installation of prepaid meters in Nigeria is absolutely free. This means that electricity consumers are not expected to pay a dime during meter installation. Once a consumer gets a meter, the electricity distribution company will send a technician who will install it for them.

However, before a prepaid meter will be installed in your property in Nigeria, you are required to apply for it and pay the necessary fees if applicable. Once you pay the needed fees where applicable, technicians will then install the meter in your property.

1. Get the necessary documents

After contacting your DisCos customer care representative, they will schedule an appointment with you on the particular date that they will install the prepaid meter. 

  • Give them detailed information about your residence for easy location.
  • Inform them about your preferred time for the installation. 

4. Site Assessment by Technician

On the scheduled date of installation, the technician from your DisCo will visit your premises and assess it. 

  • The technician will evaluate the feasibility of installing the meter at your residence.
  • Assessment of the existing infrastructure
  • Choosing the best space for the placement of the meter. 

5. Prepaid Meter Installation 

Having followed the steps to this point, now is the time to install the prepaid meter properly. The meter installation process likely involves the steps below:

  • Mounting of the meter in the appropriate space, like the wall
  • Wiring of the meter and connecting it to the already existing electrical wiring in the property. 
  • Testing of the meter to ensure that they are properly installed and working optimally.

6. Meter Activation and Initialization

After the installation of the meter, the technician will activate it. 

  • Programming the meter with vital details such as tariff rates and consumer details to ensure accurate billing. 

7. Buy Token and Recharge your Meter

Once the meter is fully activated, you will need to buy a token from your electricity provider and recharge it on your meter. 

8. Start Using your Meter

At this point, your meter is ready for use. Ensure that you monitor and maintain your meter regularly to ensure its optimal performance.
