Perhaps you’re an electricity consumer under the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, and you want to get and register your prepaid meter but don’t know how to go about it. There is no cause for alarm because we are here to guide you.

You can get and register your prepaid meter under Ikeja distribution through MAP or NMMP. This is the only way that you can get a meter from IKEDC.

To register a meter on IKEDC, customers are expected to have a functional account with the company with a completed profile. Without a completed profile, customers won’t be able to register their meter.

While the NMMP program is free for customers, users are expected to pay a certain amount of money if they want to get and register their prepaid through MAP. However, if you want to get your meter via NMMP, it may take endless waiting before you get it, but with MAP, it will only take a couple of weeks, and your meter will be ready for use.

The two major portals through which you can get and register your prepaid meter with the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company are

  • NMMP (National Mass Metering Program)
  • MAP (Meter Asset Provider Scheme)

The National Mass Metering Program is a federal government program that is aimed at ensuring that most of the electricity consumers in Nigeria are metered. As an electricity consumer, if you want to get your meter through this program, it is absolutely free. However, it may take several months before you get the meter.

On the other hand, the Meter Asset Provider Scheme is a program of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). It is designed to enable third-party prepaid meter manufacturers to partner with electricity distribution companies to issue prepaid meters to electricity consumers. To get your meter through this means, you may be charged different fees depending on the meter type. However, the good news here is that if you use this portal, your meter will be ready for use within a few weeks.

How long does it take to get an Ikeja Electric prepaid meter?

For customers who applied through MAP and paid upfront, their meter will be delivered and installed within two weeks. For those who pay in installments, it may take a longer time because their meter will be installed in line with the MAP’s installation plan.

However, for electricity consumers who applied for the Ikeja prepaid meter through NMMP, the duration isn’t specified because, in some scenarios, it may take months before you get your meter. This is so because if IKEDC has no free meter, you won’t be metered until they have a free meter. This means that if they don’t have a meter for up to a year, you won’t be metered.
